the brilliance of our parents.
Mar. 17th, 2009 05:49 pmAnd I wonder why I have headaches whenever I edit their kids articles.
"The Math Department has been very generous with us considering the adjustments
they made with the results of their very challenging periodical exams. They
even let students with grade of 5 take the removals."
Dodie, the above statement is not true as I confirmed today that 2 students got
an outright grade of 5 in math and were not allowed to take the removal exam.
I talk to an affected parent and she told me that her daughter was never given a
chance to take the removal exams contrary to some disinformation going on that
her child was allowed but she did'nt turn up during the removal exam day.
In fact the parent told me, that she begged Mam Dinah to allow her child to take
the exam. She cried in front of the teacher for an hour asking for mercy. When
her daughter arrived her daughter also begged Mam Dinah to allow her to take the
exam. But the teachers reply was " Saan ko kukunin ang extra points mo? Ano ako
magician? " What is even more sad is that the student's raw score is 38.9 and
the cut off they set was 39.5 . Just 0.6 points away from the cut-off.
I was once a student of PSHS. I remember our teachers very well. They were very
strict and demanding, but they would go out of their way to norture us, guide us
and help us. If there is doubt regarding the capability of a student, they would
always decide in favor of the student. That has been the culture of the school.
The current crop of teachers specially the 2 teachers teaching 4th year are
different. I would say that they enjoy the idea of being student tormentors.
What is unacceptable, is the fact that they have incompetent teachers because
110 students of the graduating class have failing grades in Math after the end
of the third quarter. They also gave a terribly hard final exam, which I heard,
only less than 30 students passed. My God! What kind of teachers would give an
exam like that? A passing rate of 10% on a final exam.
I strongly believe that What happened to our students in Math is not a
reflection of poor student performance but rather teachers' performance
bordering on the incompetence. Knowing that the 50% of the students already have
failing grade in the third quarter. Why would a teacher in his/her right mind
give an exam that only 10% of the students would pass? Maybe the teachers are
not in their right mind.
Because of a very low passing rate, The Math Department then recalculated the
weights of the grades. The final exam was given a weight of 7% instead of 30%,
The NAT was given a weight of 22% etc.. The funny thing is that they had the
power to recompute the grades and yet, they did not give everybody an
opportunity to take the removal exam ! They acted like gods deciding on the fate
of some students and decided that two of our poor students do not deserve the
opportunity of a removal exam, instead the 2 students were given an outright
grade of 5. They made a conscious decision to destroy the future of this 2 kids.
Kawawa talaga. The parent of the child is a single mom, trying her very best to
give her children at least a decent education. And the gods in the math
department did not even consider giving her child, a chance that she desperately
needed.
They gave an absurd final exams. The child studied very hard for that final
exam. She was also present in the practice sessions that we organized. Her mom
cannot afford to hire her a special tutor, so her mom was very thankful of what
the PTA did. But it was all for useless. The child was never given a chance to
prove herself.
Another irony is that the child has been performing very well in all her other
subjects. She had better grades in almost all subjects compared to my son and
many other students that I know. Yet She was heavily punished by the Math
department just because her skills in math are not as good as her other skills.
If there are any parents out there specially lawyers, who feels as strongly as
how i feel about this grave injustice, please contact me privately, I need to
consult you. The culture of the teachers in PSHS is changing. Some teachers no
longer believe in norturing the students. Many are now starting to have this
devil may care attitude. I pity the next batches of students who will be under
them. These teachers have to be stop. Expelled from the school by court order if
necessary.

ps. My son passed Math without taking the removals and my son's grade in Math is
not the reason why I feel so strongly about this injustice.
I also have always been a strong supporter of the school. I have always been
active in projects that benefit the school. I have supported the school either
as part of Batch77 or through my company or through my own personal donation or
recently through our PTA. As an Alumnus I have a stake in ensuring that the
school continue to be succesful in its endeavor to norture bright young students
in the Math and Sciences. Recently I have heard many comments from parents that
they will no longer allow their younger child to take the entrance exam in PSHS,
I have heard new graduates who discourage others to aim for Pisay. If this trend
continue, our beloved school will no longer be able to attract the best of the
best.
