I never wanted my abilities. I never wanted my powers. I never wanted to e part of the Spire, to have to live two sets of lives. I never wanted to sense barriers whether or not I had the time for it, to check up on whatever world I had the misfortune to find, to close and repair veils and walls that had fallen into decay. I never wanted to risk being lost or apprehended or starving or dead exhausted in a world I didn't know and didn't understand, and which in any case didn't understand me. But in the end I'm just as grateful that I have them, because without them, even with a (relatively) easier life and more time for myself, I'd be no different from any other person in the world.
