levityThey say that God has nine billion names, and when people were more willing to believe in what they could not see they did not dare to tread on or throw away any scrap of paper without looking it over, for fear that one of those names was written on it. The more perceptive ones hoped it never was, because to see the name of God was to never see anything the same way ever again.
Some days you thank your lucky stars you've never been good at names.

You don't remember everything, and you don't ever pretend to, but no matter how spotty your memory is it's still longer than most everyone else's.
You remember when time was not chained down in zones, dependent on the sun and the earth and inertia, when there was a zero point and then there was being, and time was pure number ticking on until eternity.
You remember when there was no matter, when the thought of chaining down pure consciousness into flesh and blood and bone, into clay that wore down and died, was no more than a glint of a dream in- and there was no such thing yet as a glint, or as an eye. And then there was Let there be light and Let there be the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and the beasts of the land, and there were. It was wild and messy, life tugging at the still-blurred edges of the world and exploding from every fold and corner, life past and present and future, bones under the ground and supernovas in the sky. The others found themselves eyes and wings and limbs, cut through the air and dove under the sea. You would have smiled, if you had matter, and you decided that life was better enjoyed from a distance, and you couldn't tear your eyes away.

There can only be heaven if there is hell, people say, and hell would hold no power if there were no heaven to dream of. You don't say that heaven and hell aren't two sides of the same coin, they're always and only ever the same thing, only from different eyes. People might actually believe you, and then what would happen?
