levity: (a catch)
[personal profile] levity
It was, as it nearly always was, a dark and stormy night.

The girl was slumped on a sofa, her head resting on a square pillow, her legs stuck out at an angle that was not quite impossible, but was getting there. A blue notebook was cradled in one of her arms, its spiral spine digging into her cheek; a slender pen and a pale blue mechanical pencil lay on the tiled floor. A small white dog was curled up by the base of the sofa, occasionally wheezing out soft snores. Books of assorted sizes were piled on the tiny table in front of her, some shoved haphazardly aside to make space for a colorful mug; books filled the shelves that wallpapered the room. The creature twitched in envy. The girl twitched in her sleep. The lightning twitched outside, though no one else would phrase it that way. The girl's face was illuminated. The creature's was not.

The creature was tempted to wake her. It didn't.

The creature left the library. The creature eventually returned to the library, three fat notebooks in what it had instead of a hand. The creature paused for a moment, studying the girl's face and wondering if the lightning would twitch again. It didn't.

The creature instead pried the notebook the girl was holding out of her arms,  taking care not to wake her. It scanned through the notebook without the carelessness associated with scanning. It left the notebook on the floor, an odd expression on what passed for its face.

The creature twitched, the last time anything would twitch in this passage, and then it was gone.
