levity: (how do they rise up?)
[personal profile] levity
At three in the morning the only people who should be awake are the members of the Night Watch and the kids who read about them. Jingo was one steamroller ride of absolute win.

Vimes? If I had a character as alive and as awesome as he is I'd die, if not happy, at least content with what I've been able to do. And Vetinari. Juggling. I'm willing to bet that somewhere, somewhen, a war has been waged simply for the purpose of watching how favorite authority figures act when desperate. My gulay, the entire thing was such a damn mess, and a damn mess that we've seen the likes of, ourselves, in the Roundworld, but they won in the end. Not they as in countries and armies and people, though I could make a case for Vetinari. They as in everything that should, by all rights, win out in the end.

And there was Colon telling Rust to shove his badge where the sun didn't shine. Don't forget that.

---

'I'm bought and sold, aren't I?' said Vimes, shaking his head. 'Bought and sold.'

'Not at all,' said Vetinari.

'Yes, I am. We all are. Even Rust. And all those poor buggers who went off to get slaughtered. We're not part of the big picture, right?  We're just bought and sold.'

Vetinari was suddenly in front of Vimes, his chair hitting the floor behind his desk.

'Really? Men marched away, Vimes. And men marched back. How glorious the battles would have been that they never had to fight!' He hesitated, and then shrugged. 'And you say bought and sold? All right. But not, I think, needlessly spent.' The Patrician flashed one of those sharp, fleeting little smiles to say that something that wasn't very funny had nevertheless amused him. 'Veni, vici... Vetinari.'
