on coldness and light
May. 7th, 2008 04:22 pm"Pax is cold," Lia said, a sudden vehemence entering her tone.
Miasma raised her eyebrows. "This coming from you, Li?"
Lia did not smile as she cast her gaze over the Chateau's other inhabitants, trying and failing to sound distracted. "I know everything everyone thinks of me, and I agree with all of it. I'm closed-in, I'm unforgiving, I'm bitter, I'm ruthless. I have no sense of authority, and I have nothing than even resembles patience. But I don't hide bits of information from people if I thought that'd make them act in a certain way, I don't toy with secret dreams and desires, I don't twist and manipulate for the greater good, or for the lesser evil, which is usually the same thing. I don't think I would sacrifice a single human life for all the principle in the world."
Miasma grinned. "Not even Paolo Luftsaob?"
Lia stuck her tongue out at the Chosen. "I said human life." She sobered. "But if you want me to be honest, I can't say."
"This business is a cold one indeed," Miasma intoned, her voice weaving into the ocean breeze. A single sunray splashed into her eyes, and she grinned again. "As any business is bound to be. And maybe there are times when we need someone who can keep the end in mind when all hell is breaking loose."
"The fact remains," Lia stated, "that I don't like it."
