They weren't monsters. We were fooled. We were made to expect the denizens of the Villamor Air Base Elementary School to be little monsters, creatures that would make us glad to be back in the wards with the colonoscopies and the cotton-ball making. They were annoying and they were patience-eating and gods above I never want to explain about "mesa" and "saba" again, but they were nice.

Me: Alin dito ang binili ng nanay sa palengke? Yung kabayo, yung kotse, o yung gulay at isda?
One of the VABES kids: Yung kotse!
Me: Pag pumunta ba sa palengke ang nanay mo, makakabili siya ng kotse?
The VABES kid: Hindi! Wala kaming pera!

I let it slide, because sometimes there's nothing you can do but laugh.

Every Wednesday we have NSTP (National Service Training Program, a class that is exactly what it sounds like). Usually we observe and assist in the wards of the Philippine General Hospital, which is where all the university's med students intern- I'll be interning there in six years, a long long way away. This week we had a change from the usual. We ended up teaching kindergarten kids.

Kindergarten kids have the best lines ever.
